Growing up I spent a lot of time here in the Auto Parts Store. I made up games and entertained myself and my little Brother during the summers.
I learned how to make keys and helped turn brakes.
I restocked oil and filled the coke machine.
I even secretly had my first crush here. His name was Craig and he was one of the summer helpers. To this day I don't think he ever even noticed me... memories!
Yesterday I sifted through the past. The memories . The rubble. After the hurricane My Dad patched the roof and locked the doors. He moved on and it didn't.
The store now closed, water logged and forgotten. It waits.
My sister and I paid a visit and remembered the good things. Not much can compare to an ice cold coke in a glass bottle.
It's funny how things can take you back twenty years in Meir seconds. Water skiing on Elephant Butte Lake for the first time with my Grandpa.
So what do you do when the memories are mixed with the rubble? You make the best out of it.
You look past the dust..
and you find the art around every corner!
You hang tight to the memories and smile!
Because even in the midst of the mess..
you can find good just waiting.
So I loaded up a few things and closed the door...
Till the next time we feel the urge to walk down memory lane~*** Yesterday's winner is Kim from mkdwalk.blogspot.com ~ Way to go Kim!***

It's good to remember, because there are good memories when we look past the rubble and mess. It is all about where we choose to focus. I too have those memories. Thanks for such a vivid reminder. Jackie
ReplyDeleteLove those old Coke boxes! I had one that I gave to my mom...maybe I'll have to go see if she wants to give it back ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to find the beauty in the chaos.

ReplyDeleteindeed....sad to think of it suddenly a mess and disturbed your Dad's life so.....
ReplyDeletebut I love how your optimistic yet considerate nature have inspired yourself, and in turn - us -
I can almost hear the coins as they drop into the old coke machine to make their way down to the top of the pile already inside.
ReplyDeleteIt had to be so bittersweet for you and sis. It's sometimes hard to move on but I'm so glad you could take a little of your past home with you.
Hey girl! What a sweet post, I know you brought home some goodies from your daddy's store. What a mess that must have been, but I'm glad you rescued the treasures. I'm sitting at the beach looking at the water right now. Hoping the rain will blow over again.
ReplyDeleteMy grandpa had an automotive parts supply store. I loved going there and playing...he never let my dad play there. He died suddenly right before I turned 12. I kept some things from the store that my grandmother had kept in her storage shed. I have good memories from there.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing to see the beauty from the ashes. To reminisce about times gone by. It was neat to take a peak into your past. Excited to see what you are going to do with all of your wonderful treasures. Gotta love those crates!!
ReplyDeleteThat must have been bittersweet to go back in the store and see all of those memories.
ReplyDeleteWhat a heartwarming and bittersweet post. It is fun to talk a walk down memory lane. so glad you found some treasures in the midst of it all !

Oh, so sorry the store met with a bad ending, BUT you got some nice goodies. I just knew exactly what you'd pick out as I looked through your photos. :) Love the locker bin and the Coke crates. :)
ReplyDeletenice memories...and nothing still beats a small Coke in a glass bottle esp. with the little ice shivers:)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post. I did a similar walk down memory lane through my dad's barn and shop. And I found some similar finds! I had to laugh, knowing that there were so many days when all I would have seen is junk. Growing older/wiser rocks. :)
ReplyDeleteIts funny: yesterday I fell in love with the beautiful charm necklace with the N on it and immediately thought "hm... I don't know anyone with an N name"
ReplyDeleteAnd this morning my first nephew was born and they named him Noah. Just perfect :)
Enjoyed reading your post. It's amazing what roll nature can play in our lives. I'm sorry the hurricane meant an ending to your Dad's store. Sounds like you have some great memories of your time spent there. Glad you were able to take some treasures along with the memories.

There are treasures to be found everywhere and in all sorts of rubble, physical and otherwise.:-)
ReplyDeleteI love those coke cases, Susie...real gems!!
You are right, a cold coke in a glass bottle is perfection! Wish they still had those old coolers and those little glass bottles. That's a great memory.
PS: I have seen the little bottles, but coke doesn't taste like it did 50 years ago! I am reminded of the case of Dr Pepper we ordered from Texas. We made that case of DP, made with good old fashioned pure cane sugar, last a long time! Thinking about the cold coke, brought that memory up, as I sit here drinking a cold glass bottle of old fashioned Sarsaparilla (root beer).;-)
ReplyDeleteLove the old coke crates! I see so many new projects being birthed out of this. I can see your wheels turnin'!
ReplyDeleteAnxiously awaiting your next great project!
xo
That is so neat. :)
ReplyDeleteI think we used to have a metal crate like that! Love the coke crates.
What great memories. I agree with you about coke in a bottle...how can it taste THAT much better. Love that you were able to find some treasures among the rubble.
ReplyDeleteI just love the way your mind works and the way you tell your stories! You really took me back to my childhood.
ReplyDeleteAs always, I just love coming and having a visit with you. Reading your blog is like having a nice visit with an old (as in long time;) friend.

Awwwwwww. What a sweet post.
ReplyDeleteI just cried a little- such a sweet/sad trip down memory lane. I do love your crates though. I smell another project Susie:)
ReplyDeleteThat is so sad that the shop is in such a bad state. There are definitely a lot of decor ideas lurking in that place and what a nice way to honor the memory.
ReplyDeletewow! its kinda sad but i am so glad you found sweet memories! and some great things to bring home!
ReplyDeleteIt always helps to look past the rubble and dust. Thanks for sharing your story. It is wonderful that you can use those great 'mementos' from that era. I am totally in love with the Coke crates.
ReplyDeleteI love this post, Susie! I'm glad there were some things you could salvage. I am VERY sentimental and have sweet memories attached to a LOT of stuff in my house. : )
ReplyDeleteWhat a bittersweet walk that was. I learned to water ski on a pair of "Dick Pope, Jr.s" myself...ah, those were the days.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't been by for a while and so I am catching up. Love the crates, and the ladder.
ReplyDeleteCheri
